Pershing Middle School and Our Lady of Grace School each had two winners from the San Diego County Science fair as judged by the Kiwanis Club of Grantville-Allied Gardens.  All four of the students were awarded first place by the club and all four presented their projects to the members of the club on two different days.

The winners from Pershing were Matthew Honig and Faith Henderson.
Matthew's project was titled "The Law is Hands Free-Is Your Safety a Guarantee."  His presentation proved that many accidents can still occur in greater numbers when talking on one's cell phone even hands free, than when concentrating on just driving.  Faith Henderson's project was "Recognition Time at the Scene of a Crime."  She showed that most people report seeing different things while watching the same event.

The winners from Our Lady of Grace were Cara Filley and Jeffrey Fox. Cara's project was "The Effect of Song on Memory Retention," and her study showed that people can remember more when random words are put to music that when just spoken.  The club was entertained by her musical rendition.

Jeffrey Fox's study was about whether people obeyed stop signs painted on the roads at intersections, and his title was "The Effect of I Zone Type on Stopping Frequency."  He shocked everyone with his results showing that very few drivers come to a complete stop at intersections, even in a school zone….most just driving through, and some coming to a rolling slow down and then driving through.  He spent several hours at a 4 way stop intersection near a school recording the numbers.

Each of the four first place winners were presented with a framed certificate of their achievement, and a $50 gift card for Border's Bookstore from the club. The 50 member club showed great courtesy and much interest in these wonderful projects of 7th and 8th graders.
The advisor at Pershing Middle School for these student winners was Ms Kellie Marcarelli, and the advisor at Our Lady of Grace School for the winners was Ms Teresa McKinney.
