Momentum Middle School had an incredibly busy January! We started 2007 with a couple of visits to local elementary schools to speak with 5th graders about MMS and about our Math Matters Competition.
There was an Open House at MMS on January 11th for interested 5th grade parents as well. Math Matters was held on Saturday, January 27th, and drew well over 100 fifth grade competitors to MMS. Students took a math test, played math games, and enjoyed pizza and treats with their parents. The top two finishers had to compete against each other in the auditorium in a nail-biting tie-breaker.
Ultimately, Jenny Chen of Poway won the grand prize of a laptop computer, presented to her by San Diego City Council Member Jim Madaffer. Dylan Crispen won the second prize Pocket PC, and Noah Thoron won the third prize, an iPod Nano. Their math teachers won Amazon.com gift cards. Many other 5th graders won prizes as well and all received a participation certificate.
The night before Math Matters, January 26th, MMS held its first Project Night of the year. Students showcased their projects for their parents, and enjoyed a bake sale and many raffles. Three of the projects will be submitted for the Interim Screen fair, and we hope they make it to the County Fair! Good luck to Brendan Cotta, Eddie Estrada, and Michael Todd. There will be another project day in June. Finally, MMS ended January with a trip for twelve 6th graders to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. These students also stopped to see Hollywood Blvd and Santa Monica beach.
The first MMS dance of the year was held on February 1st and the theme was Valentine's Day. Dance committee members included: Jesse Noriega, Romario Wilson, Eva Miramontes, Breeana Davis, Sophie Martinez, Ta'Shea Gadlin, Bruce Nguyen, Duncan Siscon, and Lexus Rivera. The dance raised $400 for 6th grade camp!
MMS celebrates the students who earned Citizen of the Week or Scholar of the Week status: Jonathan Burke, Travis Gubbe, Vanessa Mundy, Noe Flores, Zoe Scott, and Vinnie Skalka. An awards assembly was held on Monday, February 5th to celebrate the first semester accomplishments. Four Athletes of the Semester were named: Victoria Martinez, Travis Gubbe, Allison Devenport, and Wallace Hudson.
Students were also honored for perfect attendance (seven students not only had perfect attendance, they had no tardies as well!), excellent citizenship, Honor Roll (3.5-3.74 GPA) and Dean's List (3.75 and up GPA). Students with a perfect 4.00 GPA included: Hannah Brown, Jovan Millet, Zachary Baccash, Brandon Calhoun, Matteo Vesprini-Heidrich, Tyler Mendes, and Alexus Ramsey. Some teachers gave out special awards for their classes as well. Finally, five names were drawn for our third Principal's Lunch: Brandon Calhoun, Alexis Hernandez, Allison Devenport, Zachary Zisser, and Janessa Handlon. The honorees ate lunch with the Principal, Dean of Academics, Dean of Students, and SDUSD Board Members Mitz Lee and Katherine Nakamura. Congratulations to them!
The second semester started with the addition of 5 new students, plus Mr. Alex Connor to help with the newly-funded S.N.A.P. "6 to 6" after-school program. MMS welcomes its new students and staff and looks forward to another fun-filled semester of learning.
