(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - Doris Lane Perry, the long-time chairwoman of the Rolando Community Council passed away Saturday evening September 13, 2008 from a stroke she suffered on Thursday night.

Brought to San Diego by the Navy in 1962, Doris and her husband E.T. lived in Rolando ever since moving here.  They were married September 13, 1951 in Windsor, Connecticut at Saint Gertrude’s Catholic Church.  They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Blessed Sacrament Church on September 15, 2001, surrounded by friends and family.

“Rolando and all of San Diego have lost a tremendous friend for all that is good about San Diego” said Councilmember Jim Madaffer.  Madaffer had worked with Perry since joining the staff of former Councilmember Judy McCarty in 1993.  He remembered Perry for her tenacity and steadfast involvement to making Rolando and the surrounding neighborhoods the very best.  Madaffer reflected where he last saw her on August 14, 2008 at the recent Redwood Village sign dedication – “she gave me a hug and gave me her opinions – as she always would about things going on in the neighborhood.  She will be sorely missed” he said.

“Community improvement and community involvement were her watchwords" said Judy McCarty, retired 7th District City Councilmember.   “She took the time to personally knock on the doors of new Rolando residents to invite them to community  meetings.  She personally walked the neighborhood to pass out flyers for meetings.  She organized and led the annual Rolando Street Fair.  She gave so much of her time to the Kroc Center and the new College-Rolando Library, among many other activities.  She worked tirelessly to clean up and improve the commercial area. Because of Doris, Rolando became a ‘friendly’ community where neighbors knew and cared for each other.   Always supported by her husband E.T., Doris was the heart of Rolando, and we will miss her greatly,”  McCarty said.

"Doris loved the color purple. Purple now lives forever in our hearts as a symbol of the best community volunteer and positive leader ever," said former College Area Community Council Chair and long-time community leader Gary Debusschere.

Over the years, Doris and her community involvement knew no bounds.  She was active in the PTA and Girl Scouts and served for many years as the President of the Rolando Community Council.  Other community interests included service on the Advisory Board to Colina Park, and as a member of the Ray and Joan Kroc Salvation Army Community Center Advisory Board.  For many years Doris staffed the community relations office for the mid-City Police Department.

She and her husband E.T. dedicated many volunteer hours to the Friends of the Library, the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol, Rolando Citizens on Patrol in addition to the Rolando Community Council.

She is survived by her husband E.T., a daughter BJ, a son Ralph and many loving family members and friends.

A memorial service has been planned at the Joan Kroc Theatre at 4:00pm on Tuesday, September 23, 2008. The Joan Kroc Theatre is at 6611 University Avenue, San Diego, CA 92115.

My Aunt Doris
My parents met the Perrys in the 1950's when both lived in the Newport, RI Navy housing. Aunt Doris was there to greet me when my parents brought me home from the hospital after I was born. Even after they moved west, the families remained the best of friends. I'll always remember Aunt Doris' great smile and hearty laugh. She'll always have a special place in my heart.

Doris was Rolando Park
I was honored to have known and worked alongside Doris on the Rolando Community Council years ago. I always thought of Doris as the Rolando Park cheerleader. She worked tiredlessly for the neighborhood and the city. She had so much energy and could always be found talking to new neighbors to welcome them, and to old neighbors about their concerns in the neighborhood. She and her husband ET did so much for our new library and all of us will miss that smiling face and energy. I feel so blessed to have known she and her husband both.

An Amazing Grandmother
As a long time friend of Doris' daughter BJ and son-in-law Bruce Stewart, I can attest that among Doris' greatest accomplishments was being a loving and devoted Grandmother to her only grandchild, Phaedra Stewart.
Doris lived a "faith filled" and was a perfect example to all of us of living a life for Christ. Doris was very involved in Phaedra's life, going above and beyond the traditional role of grandmother. Doris volunteered for many years in Phaedra's classroom, helped with her scout troop and also assured that Phaedra attended her religious instruction courses at Our Lady of Grace Parish afterschool. This was all done with love, pride and JOY. Phaedra was truly blessed to have this relationship with her Grandmother and Doris' values and traditions will live on in her family.

Goodbye Dear Neighbor
It won't seem right without Doris' smiling face and warm greeting next door. You were a dear neighbor and friend, and will be sorely missed by those who had the pleasure of your acquaintance. I know Billie and Frank Gegax will be happy for you to join them in a better place, Dear Friend!
You were one of a kind, and this community won't be the same without you....

Corner stone of Rolando
As a Community Relations Officer for San Diego Police in the area for several years, I had the privelage to know and work with Doris. She was a very dedicated woman to her community and friends. She taught me patience and perseverance for a cause. She was a great mobilizer and for me will be greatly missed. It was an honor and privilege to have known and worked with her.

R.I.P.
The Rolando Street Fair and community involvement is her legacy. She taught people how to work together and get along.

I know she was heartbroken over the way some in the community conducted themselves during the JPI matter. Hopefully that did not take a toll on her but I suspect it did.

Tribute
In Doris I saw the qualities and characteristics reflecting the kind of person I want to be: honest, passionate and concerned for others. She helped make each one of us the community we are today.

She will be missed
Doris was the heart and soul of Rolando. I cannot imagine the Street Fair without her unbounding energy and vitality. She was an AMAZING woman who will be sorely missed.
