The Tenth Annual SpringFest, held on May 2nd, was a great celebration. Sherry Kelly and her SpringFest Committee are to be commended for organizing both the Friday night and Saturday festivities. The tremendous amount of time, work and effort required to set up such an event is greatly appreciated.
The parade by the Allied Gardens/Grantville Kiwanis was also a wonderful part of the celebration. Edith Dabbs (2009 inductee into the San Diego County Women's Hall of Fame) and I enjoyed riding in the parade. Another very special highlight of SpringFest was the History Booth sponsored by Kaiser Permanente. All the work done by Edie Odierno was very evident. She has collected and displayed memorabilia representing our community, since its beginning in the 1950s. Not only was there a tremendous amount of information available, but Edie displayed it in a fun way, that allowed us to reminisce.
Allied Gardens Community Council members were proud to participate in SpringFest. Our booth was manned by Paula Price, Jeff Garth, Mary Tessaro, Terri Lattman, Chuck Sachse, Betty Torre and Alan Hunter. We appreciated the many neighbors and friends stopping by to talk and who volunteered to take our short survey on the Grantville Redevelopment Project. A number of residents expressed concerns about high rise multifamily residential developments and increased density possible as a result of the various proposed Redevelopment projects. AGCC will pass these concerns on to our Councilmember Marti Emerald and to the Navajo Community Planners Inc.
The next Allied Gardens Community Council Town Hall Meeting will be on May 26th. Officer Christina Burhans with the San Diego Police Department will be our main speaker. She will discuss Police problem solving strategies for various community issues. The meeting location is at Ascension Lutheran Church, 5106 Zion Ave., and the program will begin at 7:00pm.
