(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - All first through fifth grade
students submitted entries to the City of San Diego's 10th Annual Water
Conservation Poster Contest. Our own first grader, Jamie Weiss, won 1st
place out of all first graders in schools across the City of San Diego.
On May 4, Mayor Sanders presented her with an award and a savings bond
at the City Council meeting. Way to represent the Hearst Hounds, Jamie!

Phoebe Hearst Elementary School

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - The Phoebe Hearst Elementary
School "Rock the Lights Out" Dinner and Auction held on March 13th was a
rockin' good time! Many people released their inner rock stars and
dressed as either concert-goers or their favorite musician. Even an
Elvis (or two) was in the building. Steve Hamann did an amazing job
again as emcee and auctioneer!. Due to his skills during the live
auction, the excitement in the room was palpable and the bids kept
climbing. Thank you to all the patrons for their generosity in bidding
for all the great items that were available. That generosity directly
benefits the school and our children's learning environment. Our school
sincerely appreciates the efforts of the tireless volunteers who
supported Michelle Gilmore, the Foundation President, in putting on this
event with such dedication and professionalism.

Hearst Elementary School News

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, Ca) - The Hearst Elementary School
Talent Show on Friday, February 19th was truly a "Thriller"! The theme
was a celebration of the music of Michael Jackson, and for the night,
many of the performers were the kings and queens of pop. Over 120
students performed in the show exhibiting their talents as singers,
dancers, gymnasts and musicians and included performances of Tae Kwon
Do, jumping rope and even a circus act!

The production was run very
professionally with Michelle Gilmore as the Director. Thanks to Michelle
and Assistant Director, Karen Connor, and Stage Manager, Pam Mittleman,
the children enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their skills while
learning firsthand how much practice and organization are required to
produce a theatrical performance. A big thanks also to Mike McSweeney
for making the music sound amazing and to all the parents and students
for their dedication and time spent rehearsing their acts.

Helping Out at Hearst Elementary School

By John Crawford

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, Ca) - When a local elementary
school sends out the call for volunteers, who better than the Kiwanis
Club of Grantville-Allied Gardens to come running to the rescue? October
16th was a fun evening at Hearst Elementary for hundreds of parents,
students and volunteers.
A terrific turnout of Kiwanis volunteers,
including some from Circle K, Key Club, and the Builders Club at Lewis
Middle School, decided to lend a hand in a number of ways. No doubt
there were some K-Kids volunteers present as well… after all, it's their
school!
