(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even if you will only be gone for a few minutes. Come home to a hot house, not an empty house. When going on trips or just out for the evening, use automatic timers to turn indoor lights on and off to make it appear you are home. Consider informing your neighbors if you will be away from your house for an extended period of time; ask them to watch your house and to collect your mail and newspapers. If you have house guests, familiarize them with your security precautions and make sure they follow them.

College View Estates Association Hosts Block Party

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - The College View Estates Association (representing the neighborhood immediately west of SDSU) celebrated 10 years of great block parties in June. The annual block party attracted about 150 neighbors, grandchildren and people who grew up in the area. Festivities included the ever popular chili bake-off (won by Matt Taggert) and dessert contest (won by Marialuisa Kaprielian, pictured right, for her carrot cake with home grown carrots), the six-foot grill for burgers and dogs, watermelon eating contest, water balloon toss, and a 60-foot inflatable obstacle course.

Morning walks are special, when the air is fresh and still, and our evening walk is positively magical as twilight falls. Trail Guides will connect you to plants and creatures, have you observe scent and motion, identify habitats and understand ecozones surviving the arid weather. Our walks are free, very interesting, and geared towards all ages and interests. Sturdy shoes, hat, water and sunscreen are recommended.

Fine Art Exhibition Now On Display At Mission Trails Regional Park

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation is pleased to present "Foothills 5: Five Artists, Five Media", a fine-art exhibition of paintings by five award-winning artists from the Foothills Art Association in La Mesa. The exhibition will be on display through July 16th.

The Foothills 5 Artists will be exhibiting in their preferred media. The artists include:
L.J. Crowe: Acrylic; Loretta Deczynski: Colored Pencil; Jennifer Meeder: Watercolor; Hazel Ross: Oil and Carolyn Teincuff: Pastel
"Foothills Five: Five Artists, Five Media," will be on display in the beautiful Mission Trails Gallery located in the 14,700 square foot air conditioned Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor and Interpretive Center. The Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and is located at: One Father Junipero Serra Trail, San Diego, 92119. Admission is free.

Grantville Vacancy Announced on Navajo Community Planners

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - Mark Rawlins, Chair of Navajo Community Planners, Inc. (NCPI) has announced a vacancy for a Grantville representative.

This community organization oversees all land-use issues for Grantville, Allied Gardens, Del Cerro and San Carlos.

The term will expire in March of 2011. An election to fill the unexpired term will be held at the next NCPI meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 19th at Temple Emanu-El.

More Vandalism To Artificial Turf At Pershing Middle School

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - Vandalism to the artificial turf field at Pershing Middle School has been reported by Terry Cords, president of Crusader Soccer Club.

"This is the first vandalism to the field itself in over a year," Cords said. "It occurred in the southeast portion of the field, just off the playing area."
The matter has been reported to the police. If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact Ed Zwibel, the San Diego Police Department's Community Relations Officer for our area at (858) 495-7943.
"This is a prime sports field complex we share with the San Diego Unified School District and the City of San Diego's Park and Recreation Department and our community," Cords said. "I'm asking everyone using or living close to the field to be alert and to contact the police department's business office at (619) 231-5000 if they see or hear anything suspicious at the field."

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - Activities for both adults and children are numerous, fun and FREE. The Friends will be underwriting any costs.
Adults may enjoy a Hatha Yoga class for all levels, including beginners. The classes began on Tuesday, July 7th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and continue throughout July. Call the library to register.

On Tuesday, July 20th, the Friends will present an Oasis class from 1:30-3:00 p.m. entitled "Multiple Intelligences: Which Way Are You Intelligent?" The next class, "The History of Balboa Park", will be held August 17th.

Allied Gardens Girl Scout Troop Celebrates 13 Years of Scouting, Gold Award Ceremony

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - Girl Scout Troop 3247 of Allied Gardens Service Unit is wrapping up 13 years of scouting in our community. Over the years, 32 girls have participated in the troop which started at Foster Elementary in 1997. Seven girls have continued through their senior year of high school - earning awards, serving their community, inspiring younger girls, camping, swimming, sailing, skiing and more. Congratulations to Clara Townsend, Courtney Wilmers, Cree Kelso, Rachael Jander, Rebecca Koppel, Tanya Camper, and Sydney Boman. Their leaders, Kathy Camper and Tammy Wilmers, have been proud to watch them grow from goofy, giggling kindergarteners to beautiful, talented young women who take pride in their accomplishments and in their community.

Kori Truesdale, a well qualified speaker from Featheringill Mortuary will speak on "Preplanning in the Event of Death." Preplanning can make a difficult time easier. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

In addition, mark your calendar for July 20th and August 17th for two presentations by Oasis. The first will be entitled "Multiple Intelligences: Which Way Are You Intelligent?" The second will be "The History of Balboa Park: San Diego's Crowned Gem".

Department of Animal Services Waives Adoption Fees for Cats

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - This summer might be just the time to welcome a new pet into your household. The County Department of Animal Services is waiving adoption fees for cats due to an influx of kittens in its animal shelters

The fees will be waived thru September 4th for cats six months and older. Only two cats per person can be adopted.

Enjoy A Guided Nature Walk at Mission Trails Regional Park

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - Mission Trails continues to bloom in wildflowers of primrose, sunflower, wishbone, nightshade and monkey flowers, attracting beautiful butterflies. A Trail Guide will identify these and more on nature walks through the fresh morning air. Weave through shady groves of oaks, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, grasslands and riverfront - each step a discovery in nature. See a Kumeyaay home site, learn local history and culture, and study up a bit on geography. Our walks are free and geared toward all ages and interests. Sturdy shoes, hat, water and sunscreen are recommended.
Walks are offered Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays from 9:30-11:00 a.m., starting from the park's Visitor and Interpretive Center, One Father Junipero Serra Trail, San Carlos. Walks are also offered on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, from 8:30-10:00 a.m., from Kumeyaay Lake Campground Entry Station, Two Father Junipero Serra Trail, at the San Carlos-Santee border.

Lake Murray Fishing Derby Attracts Young Anglers

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - Forty-six children participated in the annual Lake Murray Kiwanis Fishing Derby at Lake Murray on Saturday, May 22nd. Paul Woolery and his San Diego Fly Fishers (who meet every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the San Carlos Rec Center) assisted with everything from baiting hooks and repairs to fishing pools to serving as contest judges.

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - On May 12th, San Carlos Friends of the Library (SCFOL) recognized the many volunteers who give of their time and talents to bring you the monthly used book sale and help the library staff with their many duties. About 50 volunteers received SCFOL T-shirts, and pizza was enjoyed by all.

Special recognition was given to Jack Hayhurst for his 15 years of volunteering at the library and monthly SCFOL book sales. He is moving to Sonoma, Calif. to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren. The next SCFOL Book Sale is July 3rd. Celebrate our Independence by reading a good book! Paperbacks are just three for $1.00!

It is very rare, however, for a student to receive summer math exercises to help keep their mathematical skills sharp. A study from the Center for Summer Learning at John Hopkins University revealed that, �on average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months� (Cooper, 1996)

Started in 1995, the FaceLift program makes living space improvements for homeowners who are low-income, disabled or elderly. Nearly 5,000 volunteers have been mobilized for this cause over the past 15 years, giving facelifts to hundreds of homes in City Heights that were previously best described as �tired.�
